The name Citrine is derived from the Latin word 'Citrina', meaning lemon. It comes in various tonal colours of yellow, orange, brown and smoky brown. It can contain rainbow or sparkle inclusions. Most Citrine is deliberately worked on using heat and is known as heated treated Amethyst. Gem quality pieces of Citrine are very rare. The best qualities of natural Citrine can be found in Brazil and Madagascar. Both Citrine, Smoky Quartz and Amethyst are often mined together.
The Ancients believed Citrine had all the positive attributes of Amethyst and more. It is known in Feng Shui as the 'stone of abundance and wealth' as well as the 'bringer of joy'. It was thought to carry the power of the sun and regeneration.
Citrine has been referred to as the 'merchants stone' or 'memory stone' due to a superstition that it would bring the wearer prosperity.
Geology: Citrine is a microcrystalline form of Quartz, as is Amethyst, a mineral based on silicon dioxide. Its physical properties are those of Quartz. Citrine can be found in the same geological environments as smoky quartz and is often intergrown with it. Found in metamorphic and igneous rocks. Contrary to Amethyst, Citrine crystals my show a macro mosaic structure and become very large. It is said to have vitreous lustre which becomes duller in large stones.
