Apophyllite is a class of mineral from the Phyllosilicate family. Often a flakey white textured Crystal but it may also be present in rare hues of green (Fluorpophyllite), a clear appearance (Hydroxyaphyllite) and a yellow/brown appearance (Natroapophyllite). While the rarer greener version of the stone is found in India, Brazil and Canada, other forms of Apophyllite have been found in Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Czech Republic, Italy, Britain and Australia.
The name Apophyllite comes from the Greek word ‘apophylliso’ which directly translates as ‘it flakes off’. It was a French Mineralogist Rene Just Hauly who first named the mineral Apophyllite in 1806.
Apophyllite is striking in appearance due to its vitreous and pearly lustre and therefore makes a great ornament in the home. It was used for centuries in the ‘art of gazing’ where a stone was passed down for generations as a mirror for the past so that a person could reflect on the story of their elders. Throughout history, the Tibetans would also this stone to help with breathing problems.
Geology: Apophyllite is found in ancient lava and basalt flows. The crystals grow in solid cavities called Amygdules, Vesicles know as Geodes, formed by air bubbles at the time the rock was molten and then cooled. Apophyllite’s crystals are usually pseudo-cubic, prismatic or tubular. Apophyllite is made up of Potassium-Calcium, Fluorite-Silicate minerals; that is structurally related to the Zeolite family of Aluminium Osilicates. Like Zeolite, it has a high-water content and becomes flaky when heated. It is extremely difficult to cut into faceted gems because of its softness, thus reflected in their value.

This item is a natural crystal or rock formed over many thousands of years and may have natural inclusions and natural imperfections. Each item is unique, colour is never even. Part of their natural beauty is the fact they are imperfect. Imperfections can include the following, broken rough edges and minor repairs done during the mining, extraction process and pre-sale preparation. Inclusions are within the crystal or rock itself and are totally natural and not imperfections.
