Black Tourmaline occurs as an accessory mineral in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, its most common colour is black. Traces of it are found in Quartz, Granite, Marble and Schist. Tourmaline’s discovery in tin mines, dates back to 1400 BC in a town called called Zschorlau in Germany, from where its nickname ‘Schorl’ is derived. Schorl is the most abundance form of Tourmaline in nature.
Fine crystal specimens and gemstones are considered rare and this can reflect in their price. The prismatic, vertically straited crystals may be long and slender or thick and columnar and are uniquely triangular in cross-section. It's vast popularity as a gemstone began in 1876 when mineralogist and jeweller George Kunz sold a Green Tourmaline from Maine to the famous Tiffany and Co. in New York, and its desirability spread.
Geology: Black Tourmaline belongs to the trigonal crystal system and part of the aluminium borosilicate family and it specifically includes magnesium, iron and other metal elements that determine its colour. It’s found on every continent in the world. Tourmaline is produced in pegmatites. These are voids deep underground that are filled with hot liquid that is rich in different minerals like iron and silicone. When the liquid begins to cool, the minerals crystalize to form Tourmaline Crystals.
In Ancient times, black Tourmaline was used in burials. Found in tombs of the Ancient Egyptians, it was believed to protect the body against damage caused by Osiris after death. During the Medieval period, elegant jet-black Tourmaline was used across various cultures. It is said that Shamon from ancient tribes relied on the stone for protecting them from negative spirits and energies from the Earth when carrying out ancient rituals. In Feng Shui, Tourmaline was used for protection. The Chinese believed that Tourmaline helps to create an energetic shield preventing unwanted energies. Travellers also wore Tourmaline as a symbol of protection, to prevent danger on their journey’s.

As is the case with all precious gems such as diamonds, rubies and emeralds, Quartz’s value will also vary according to its grade and clarity. Quartz can appear in various forms, in polished and un-polished finishes.
Quartz has been evolutionary and has been used for thousands of years and was regarded as a super-frequency stone and commonly adorned the tops of pyramids. It was said to absorb negativity and balance the energy system. Today Quartz is essential in our everyday lives and used everywhere around us in technology.
The word ‘Quartz’ is derived from the German word ‘Quarz’. The Ancients Greeks referred to it as a ‘Krustallos’, derived from the Ancient Greek ‘Kruos’ meaning icy cold.
Geology: Quartz (clear) is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silica (silicon dioxide). The atoms are linked in a continuous framework of SiO₄ silicon oxygen tetrahedra with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra. Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earths continental crust behind feldspar.
Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system at room temperature and to the hexagonal crystal system at temperatures above 573°c. It occurs in nearly all acid igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
